How to join Cub Scouts?
New scouts are invited to join at any rank, but must do so by the end of November so that they can meet their achievement goals. Transferring scouts are welcome to join Pack 507 at any point during the scouting year. Late registrations and scouts transferring from other packs should contact Derek Loftstrom for registration and placement.
Can my daughter join Cub Scouts?
Recently, the Boy Scouts of America adopted girls into their scouting programs and Pack 507 has followed suit. For specific questions about girls joining Cub Scouts, please join us at our annual Ice Cream Social Q&A or email us at cubscout507+info@gmail.com.
Can my son join Cub Scouts if he did not begin as a Tiger?
Definitely. Not all Cub Scouts begin in the first grade. Any boy or girl between first and fifth grade may join Cub Scouts, regardless if they have completed any of the preceding ranks. The only requirement is that they earn their Bobcat badge before working towards current rank requirements as this will introduce them to the basics of the Cub Scout program.
What are the uniform guidelines/where do patches go?
The uniform is an essential part of the Cub Scout. It helps promote a sense of belonging, identification and commitment and also symbolizes character development, citizenship, training and personal fitness. Information on uniform requirements and patch placement for Tiger, Wolf and Bear Cub Scouts can be found here. Guidelines for Webelos and Arrow of Light scouts can be found here. If you have any questions about uniforms, the staff at the Woburn Scout Store are a great resource, as well as your den leader.
Additionally, the pack offers an alternative "class B" t-shirt option in lieu of the full Cub Scout uniform for certain events and activities. Class B t-shirts can be purchased in the Pack 507 Online Store.
When and where do den meetings take place?
Dens typically hold one or two den meetings a month - usually rotating between scouts' homes - at the discretion of the den leader and other families in the den. While there are no regular pack meetings, there are several pack events that occur over the course of the year that scouts are encouraged (or required, depending on rank requirements) to attend. There is a lot of flexibility in Cub Scouts; our goal is for scouts to have fun and inspire them to be active in the community. If scheduling conflicts are preventing you from considering joining scouts, we can undoubtedly match you up with another den that fits perfectly with your schedule.
What events can siblings attend?
We believe family is at the core of one's community and as such, the Cub Scout program encourages family participation in many events throughout the year. All family members - parents and siblings included - are welcome to join us on pack events such as camping trips, hikes, awards ceremonies and of course the family fun day event! To ensure that meetings run efficiently and to help scouts maintain focus and stay engaged, we do ask that siblings refrain from participating in den meetings however.
How can parents participate and help?
Parents who are interested in volunteering can reach out to us via email at cubscout507+info@gmail.com. We are always looking for people interested in becoming den leaders or helping to lead or help plan pack events!
Should my child work on requirements at home?
The cub scout curriculum is built around the expectation of a certain number of den meetings throughout the year. To provide a fun and flexible atmosphere, pack 507 encourages holding fewer meetings each month at each den's discretion. With that in mind, there will be things that are the scout's responsibility to cover at home outside of den meetings either on their own or with their parents or guardian. These will be different for each den, and it will be the den leader's responsibility to communicate these to scouts in advance.
